COPPER CATEGORIES

Sort your scrap copper wire out It may all look the same to the untrained eye, but copper wire is divided into five categories. On top of this, most scrap merchants separate scrap copper into low grade or high grade. High grade can be identified by having a single layer of insulation.

Low grade has a double layer. The five categories go from 70% down to 25% as follows:

• 70% – single core cable that’s around 5-8mm in diameter 50.
• 60% – the type of wire that is usually found inside electronics.
• 45% – this wire is usually found in household goods such as extension cord and appliance leads.
• 25% – steel wire armoured cable which is generally used for communications.
